Under the Environmental Planning & Assessment Act 1979 (EP&A Act) projects can be classified as State significant development (SSD) or infrastructure (SSI) - often referred to as major projects - if they are important to the State for economic, environmental or social reasons.
Major projects are assessed under Division 4.7 of the EP&A Act and require development consent from the Independent Planning Commission or the Minister for Planning (or delegate) before they may proceed.
The Department of Planning, Industry and Environment (DPIE) co-ordinates the whole-of-government assessment of the merits of these projects.
The Heritage Council and Heritage NSW provide comments to DPIE regarding major projects.
These comments are published by the Department of Planning Industry and Environment.
