What we do

A team of people across NSW, working together to protect, manage and celebrate NSW heritage.

Heritage NSW works with communities to protect, celebrate and manage our incredible heritage across NSW.

We provide an integrated approach to conserving Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal heritage. We have the responsibility to review applications, to list items on the State Heritage Register, declare Aboriginal Places and register state shipwrecks.

We work with the community to repatriate Aboriginal ancestral remains, administer grants for heritage conservation and provide secretariat services to the Heritage Council of New South Wales and the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage Advisory Committee.

Some of our responsibilities include:

  • State Heritage Register listings and approvals
  • Aboriginal cultural heritage
  • Archaeology and maritime heritage
  • Grants delivery and activation
  • Policy and practice
  • Community engagement and celebration

Our staff are located across the State and work together to make sure our heritage is protected and conserved for future generations, providing advice to owners, managers and the wider community about heritage places and the management of those places.
