Heritage Near Me funded projects: Activation grants

The Heritage Near Me Activation Grants program supported projects that actively increased community interaction and participation with publicly accessible heritage items listed in a local council’s Local Environmental Plan (LEP). This program recognised the importance of activating local heritage spaces and precincts to conserve their heritage significance.

The following projects were approved by the NSW Government through the Heritage Near Me incentives program from 2016-2019.

Note: The 4-year Heritage Near Me program ended in June 2019. There are no longer any grants available under this program. Check the list of other grant funding opportunities.

Heritage Activation Masterplan for the Manly West Esplanade Maritime Precinct

Develop a masterplan for the West Esplanade Precinct Manly to rejuvenate, increase appreciation and visitation to the areas heritage and historical items, and includes a feasibility study for reinstating the boardwalk and harbour pool (c1931), and showcasing the Art Gallery façade (c1924).


History and Heritage on Wauchope Riverside Walk

Mountain Culture opens in heritage building on Parke St, Katoomba

Nowra CBD Historical Walk – Historical interpretative signage and supporting documentation

Expand the existing Historical Walk in Nowra CBD through the installation of interpretative signage. Installing interpretive signage accommodates a free learning experience where the signs provide historical information and insights to educate, create an experience and evoke a connection to location.


Pretty Point Bridge Truss Restoration, Conservation and Display Area

The 1896 Pretty Point Bridge trusses are currently remote from the heritage site and not publicly accessible. This project will return the trusses to the heritage place, to be secured, conserved, protected, and publicly displayed, so as not to preclude their future re-installation on the bridge.

It will culminate in a significant community celebration of the Canowindra Historical Societies 50-year Anniversary in 2017.


Blowes Conservatory enhancement project

Revitalise the Blowes Conservatory so that it may be used as exhibition space for additional static displays during the period that it is currently closed and empty. Works proposed will enhance the building while meeting current building standards, making the space safer, more accessible and more social.


Broadway Museum – Exhibition Space Expansion Project

Goulburn's historic former Town Hall will be revitalised as a state-of-the-art Performing Arts Centre, returning this iconic building to the centre of Goulburn's civic life. The Spanish Flu Pandemic 1918-19 and the Tenterfield hospital Isolation Ward

Restore and adapt the former isolation ward, designed for victims of the Spanish flu in 1918, into a state of the art museum and education centre. Our community, school children, and visitors, will be informed and educated about an important part of Tenterfield's and Australia's medico-social history.

The refurbished Willows museum will become a hub for activities and exhibitions, engaging artists and artisans across Murrumbidgee Council area. It will provide an appealing introduction to the site leading visitors on a path of exploration through an authentic 1920s industrial heritage precinct.


Activating the Reform Mine, Lucknow

Orange City Council

Expose the Reform Mine Site's mining remnants and light the poppet head frame. The entire village of Lucknow is a rare and largely intact mining landscape uniquely sighted on the Mitchell Highway.


Balranald Discovery Centre Precinct and Heritage Trail Project

Preserve the integrity of three buildings of significant historic interest located on the perimeter and grounds of Balranald's tourism precinct, The Balranald Discovery Centre. These three buildings are part of a Heritage Trail that is being developed incorporating other local and regional heritage buildings and sites to help build tourism and grow the visitor economy within the Balranald Shire.


Branxton Heritage Walk

Identify buildings of significance located in the main streets of Branxton known as Maitland Road or The Old New England Highway, Clift Street and John Rose Avenue. The walk will be traced using cast bronze plaques to be inserted into the existing pedestrian pavement outside fifteen historical sites and listed landmarks accredited by Cessnock City Council in the Branxton Historical and Commercial Precinct. Support information for the walk will be provided by booklets and an app that can be downloaded to mobile devices.


Conservation and adaptive re-use of Captain's Cottage

Refurbishment and remedial works at Moama's Captain's Cottage, as per the 2014 Captain's Cottage Conservation Management Plan and accompanying engineer's structural defects report. The project will include the adaptive re-use of the cottage.


Conserving Heritage at Premier Farmhouse, Inverell

Restore heritage at a 2-storey timber building known in Inverell CBD, known as Premier Farmhouse. Works include construction of a covered walkway and access ramp, reinstatement of the heritage awning according to archive photos and installation of a mural and display of moveable heritage that tells the story of the Inverell community.

Conservation, interpretation and promotion of Corunna Cemetery to enhance visitation to the site and provide an additional tourist product to the Tilba region.

Eskbank Voices – Sharing the stories of Eskbank House

Lithgow City Council

To engage visitors to Eskbank House and Museum through a variety of innovative experiences and improved infrastructure. Mary's Garden involves the recreation of the earliest kitchen garden at the house and the installation of disability compliant access via the paths through the garden. The garden will also be used as an extension of the museum telling the stories of the women who lived in the house.

The works will reactivate unused sections of the library, revitalise the children's reading section, provide seating options for residents, and improve the structure and aesthetic value of the external window sills.


Rich and Co. Bond Store

Temora Railway Precinct – Pardey's Flour Mill and former Locomotive Depot and Roundhouse Interpretative Walk

Develop an interpretative walk linking the Local Heritage Item of Pardey's Flour Mill with the location of the former Temora Railway Station Roundhouse and Depot. This site will link directly with the recently restored Temora Railway Station building and platform, which is a State Heritage Item, to provide visitors to the site with an enhanced understanding of the role of the precinct in grain receival, processing and transport, and the maintenance, supply, support and upkeep of steam locomotives from 1913 until the 1960s.
