This issue of Heritage NSW will be the last to feature a message from Mrs Hazel Hawke who will soon retire as Chair of the Heritage Council of NSW. For the last five years Mrs Hawke has been an inspiring advocate for heritage and her tireless support will be greatly missed.
Our cover this month features Buhrich House which was designed and built by Hugh Buhrich as a home for himself and his wife, Eva Buhrich. Both architects, they fled Germany in the 1930s and migrated to Australia in 1938, by way of London. Hugh Buhrich practiced architecture in Sydney from 1945 to 1991, mainly in residential design. Like his contemporary Harry Seidler, he brought to Australia the international influences of modernism.
The house is set high above the water's edge in Castlecrag, the suburb which was once Walter Burley Griffin's vision for a new society. This unique 20th century building is enthusiastically praised by architects for its contribution to modern architecture. It has just been listed on the State Heritage Register after nomination by the NSW Chapter of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.
