Our Century, Our Heritage; Keeping 20th Century Places

During the 1960s a number of places of great heritage significance were demolished and replaced with high-rise buildings that many regarded as ugly and unsympathetic. The demolition of these places prompted heritage legislation to be enacted in the 1970s across Australia. The heritage protection of 19th century buildings is now easy to explain to the community but it is timely to evaluate the heritage significance of post-war places, including those high-rise buildings which were once considered unlovable. Are post-war buildings worthy of protection?

This new publication plots some of the major changes of this century and looks at their impact on built heritage across Australia. Published jointly by all state heritage agencies, it highlights some of Australia's important 20th century items and asks us to think about what places should be saved from the 20th century.

Placing Federation
Too often Federation stories are presented as a parade of official and unofficial conferences and conventions. By finding out about places, events and people linked to Federation in our local districts, we can contribute to the mosaic of the national story.

Placing Federation; A Checklist For Local Studies of Federation And Surveys of Federation Places in NSW has been designed to help local communities prepare for the celebration of the Centenary of Federation in 2001. Historian, Bruce Pennay, provides a practical resource that will help those involved in historical projects identify Federation stories in their own area. The book was produced with the support of funding under the 1997 Heritage Assistance Program.

Placing Federation will help people get started on their own Federation stories. It equips researchers with the right questions to ask in their investigation and points them to potential sources of information. It discusses the major themes of the movement and looks at events leading up to Federation in 1901. A practical checklist will help guide the researcher on their search.
