Our special theme for the June issue of Heritage NSW is maritime heritage. Nearly 2,000 ships have been lost off the coast of NSW since 1788. Much can be learnt about our significant maritime history by studying the relics and remains still surviving underwater. The Heritage Office's Maritime Archaeology Program works with the community to protect and interpret these fascinating and fragile sites.
In September maritime archaeologists, divers, researchers and interested members of the public will
gather at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Darling Harbour for the conference,
The Pacific Rim: Trade and Migration.
The organisers have just confirmed that Kathy Abbass of the Rhode Island Maritime Archaeology P
roject will give a keynote address. Ms Abbass's recent research work is of great interest to us here
in Australia. She will talk about the latest investigations on a Newport Harbor shipwreck thought
to be Captain Cook's barque Endeavour.
