This is a very special issue of Heritage NSW as it marks the first with both a new Chair of the Heritage Council and new Director of the Heritage Office. Last month Director, Rosalind Strong, joined former Chair, Hazel Hawke, in announcing her retirement.

Rosalind Strong was Director of the Heritage Office from its establishment in July 1996. She navigated the Heritage Office's transition from a small branch in DUAP to a separate agency reporting to the Minister for Planning. Under her leadership the Heritage Office developed as a vigorous organisation with a higher profile. She led the office in the implementation of the NSW Government Heritage Policy, taking advantage of the wider brief of the Heritage Council to focus on Aboriginal, movable and natural heritage.

We bid Rosalind farewell and thank and applaud her for her leadership over the last six years.
