Working on the plaster pattern

Once the clay pattern has reached a satisfactory stage, a harder plaster pattern is prepared, as shown above.

In this picture, the lettering is being added to the motto ribbon to spell-out the motto. Note the tools on the left for accurately spacing and placing the letters to achieve a legible and attractive expression of the wording, and the drawing below that is being referred to for accuracy in transcribing the Latin text.
