Planning Minister the Hon. Kristina Keneally MP joined Chair of the Heritage Council of NSW, Gabrielle Kibble, to honour the outstanding work of 23 recipients at the 2008 NSW Government Heritage Volunteer Awards held at the Museum of Sydney on 20 November 2008.

Award recipient Andy Macqueen shared some
of his own experiences as a volunteer in
natural heritage conservation.

Ms Keneally said the awards recognised the exceptional contribution to heritage conservation, management and promotion by some 'unsung heroes' in our community.

"We have volunteers to thank for years of effort in protecting and conserving places that are a part of our history as a State,” Ms Keneally said.

"This year's recipients represent a cross-section of community based organisations, heritage agencies and individuals from regional and metropolitan areas of NSW all of whom have given up their own time so the rest of us can enjoy and marvel our proud history," she said.

Ms Keneally said volunteering continues to be a strong part of the Australian tradition and is a practical way to care and serve the local community.

"Volunteering is a positive way to bring people together and to harness their skills and experience for the wellbeing of the broader community," Ms Keneally said.

"At times it can be a thankless job, which is why it's important to regularly recognise the role played by volunteers and the awards recipients this year have done a fantastic job in protecting NSW heritage.

"They share my view and the Government’s view that heritage in NSW is not something locked in the past but something that needs to be continually maintained, promoted and protected for the future," the Minister said.

Following the presentation ceremony, guests took part in a guided tour of the Museum of Sydney's latest exhibitions.

As part of the afternoon tour programme, landscape heritage specialist Stuart Read from the
Heritage Branch hosted a walking tour around Macquarie Place and the Botanic Gardens.
