On Wednesday 14 November members of the heritage conservation community and other guests gathered in the historic Jubilee Room at Parliament House in Macquarie Street for the sixth annual NSW Government Heritage Volunteer Awards presentation ceremony.

Meredith Walker
Doyenne of the heritage conservation movement and award recipient Meredith Walker highlights the critical contribution of community knowledge in knowing, valuing and caring for our heritage.

"This awards program has seen more than 130 groups and individuals formally acknowledged for their work over the years," Mr Sartor told the gathering.

"The wider community owes these volunteers a great debt for sharing their knowledge and for working to preserve our State's past.

"This year's awards recognise the contribution of organisations and individuals donating their time and skills in a range of different ways from running community campaigns, to recording family histories or working for historical societies.

"The NSW Government is committed to preserving heritage in a practical way- through the re-use of historical buildings or the transformation of historical assets into tourism attractions.

"This can provide enormous benefit to communities - particularly in regional areas where every dollar spent on heritage conservation helps to boost tourism and generate local jobs.

"I thank and congratulate all our heritage volunteers for their contribution towards our state's living heritage," Mr Sartor said.
