The State Government have recognised the outstanding contributions of heritage volunteers across NSW to the conservation of the State's cultural heritage.

Assistant Planning Minister Diane Beamer presented NSW Government Heritage Volunteer Awards to twenty-five heritage volunteers from across NSW in a ceremony at Parliament House on 29th October.

The purpose of the awards if to recognise the outstanding performance of people who have significantly improved the profile of heritage management in their local communities.

"We have volunteers to thank for years of effort in protecting and conserving places that the community now appreciates as reminders of our collective past," Minister Beamer said.

The NSW Government makes a direct financial contribution to heritage conservation of $2.4M each year through the Heritage Incentives Program.

This funding is multiplied many times over by the unpaid contribution of volunteers to community heritage projects, either through local councils or through community organisations.

The recipients represent a wide variety of volunteer work, from maintaining heritage gardens, to protecting Aboriginal heritage sites and promoting maritime heritage.

"Australians have a strong history of donating their time to worthy causes," the Minister said.

One in three Australians volunteer their time to volunteer community work. Most are from regional Australia.

Volunteering enables people to acquire new knowledge and skills and to develop their personal potential while working to conserve their important community's heritage.

The Minister further encouraged everyone to consider how they too can volunteer their time to help protect and understand our heritage assets.
