Rathmines Park listed on State Heritage Register. 24 November 2005
On Thursday 24 November 2005 more than 350 people, including dozens of former Catalina aircrews, ex RAAF and WAAAF personnel, gathered at the Catalina memorial in Rathmines Park, Lake Macquarie to celebrate the listing of the the former RAAF station on the State Heritage Register.
Rathmines was the site of the largest flying boat base in the Southern Hemisphere and the longest serving during World War II. It is the most intact example of its kind in Australia, with a significant amount of World War II physical fabric remaining on site.
For many guests, the community event was a chance to catch up with former mates and perhaps witness, for the final time, the sights and sounds of a 'black Cat' in the skies above. View more information on Rathmines Park in the online heritage database.
