NSW Heritage Database Software

The heritage database software has been designed as a user-friendly tool for preparing heritage studies and managing the information obtained through this process.

This software is available free of charge to NSW government agencies, local government and heritage professionals conducting heritage studies and compiling S.170 Registers.

In June 2009 the new Version 4 Heritage Database Software was released containing a range of new features outlined below. It is strongly recommended that all users upgrade their shiuser3.mdb file to shiuser4.mdb to obtain the new features.

Licencing
Before downloading and using the software please read the Licence Agreement. You may download and copy the software and manuals for a non-profit purpose, provided you copy all of it, and you do not make any changes or additions. The documentation may be quoted with appropriate attribution to the Heritage Branch.

As long as your PC has sufficient capacity to run your chosen version of Microsoft Access, there should be no additional difficulty in running the Heritage Database Software.

Features
Features of the heritage database software include:

  • facility to include multiple images
  • programmed in Microsoft Access
  • it's free
New Features of Version 4 include:

  • new item type for Conservation Areas
  • clarification and addition of Aboriginal Language Areas
  • streamlining of images. no thumbnails required. images now larger.
  • remove unwanted items by making them redundant
  • ability to find and restore redundant items
  • simplification of owners name pick-list
  • new 1 page inventory sheet
  • additional LEP Schedule 5 printout report
Training

Reading the heritage database documentation should be sufficient for users to operate the application. The documentation contains an overview of the heritage database and screen grabs and instructions on searching and navigation techniques, data-entry and installation of software.

A half-day training session can be held at Parramatta if required.

Before using this software for a heritage study, please contact the Heritage Branch to have a serial number embedded in your copy of the database. To download for evaluation purposes, right-click on the links below, then select 'Save Target As' to save the files to your PC or network drive.

Front-end Database  The first component of the software is the 'front-end'which contains all the programming and 'look-up' tables. The file "shiuser4.zip" must be 'unzipped' before use.

Version 4 is available for MS Access 97, MS Access 2000/2003, or MS Access 2007.

Back-end Database  The second component is the 'back-end' which contains all the data tables. The file "shidata4.zip" must be 'unzipped' before use. In Version 4, the same database is used for all versions of MS Access. Do not open this file directly with MS Access!

Documentation  Below are guides for installation, upgrading and data entry. If you want to view the documents on screen just click on the heading with your left mouse button. (You will first need to install the free Acrobat Reader). To save the documents to the hard drive, click with your right mouse button.
