| Physical Description: |
Centennial Park is on the boundary of four local government areas, Sydney, Randwick, Woollahra and Waverley. This south-east corner is in the Waverley Council area. This narrow arm of the park includes an impressive series of high wrought iron gates and robust chamfered sandstone pillars. The gates are at the entry to the curving Musgrave Avenue. The focus of this section of the park is Musgrave Pond, a habitat for ducks, lined with fairly recently planted willows (c.1965). The central lawn picnic area is flat with isolated mature English and Holly oaks (from c.1920). Surrounded by rising ground on three sides with a dense canopy of mature trees. These trees include old Moreton Bay and Port Jackson figs, and Hoop and Norfolk Island pines, to 16m high. Possibly planted c.1900. Other more recent plantings include Coral trees, Radiata pines and Swamp oak. There is a small section of indigenous remnant vegetation existing on the sloping, sandy hill of the eastern boundary. This vegetation includes Banksia integrifolia, Monotoca elliptica and Lomandra longifolia. Other significant elements include the iron palisade boundary fence with sandstone plinth. |
