Statement of Significance

Outstanding, late nineteenth century, public school building, with well integrated, early twentieth century, second storey addition. Excellent stone colonnade to original building of special note. Main facades essentially unaltered. Considerable local community and historic interest. Part of important grouping including church, convent and Scarba House. Local significance.

Description
Construction Years: 1890 - 1945
Physical Description: Outstanding stone building with pebbledash second floor. Original single storey part exhibits a strong Classical influence. Colonnaded verandah of particular note. Round columns supporting semi-circular arches. Second storey addition is best described as a Federation Arts and Crafts style. Gabled projection at each end. Also features central gablet with large finial. High narrow windows. Roughcast chimneys. Let down only by concrete roof tiles. No other significant alterations apparent on front façade. Many rear additions over the years.

History
Historical Notes: Site purchased in 1881 and this building completed as a single storey structure in 1883. Enrolments grew rapidly. Building enlarged in 1893 and second storey added in 1907-08. A large verandah was enclosed in 1922. The original building was joined by new buildings in 1912, 1916 (boys' school) and 1929. The site was enlarged to the north in 1907 and 1927.
