Statement of Significance

Excellent example of a 1930's, Art Deco/Egyptian style commercial building. Typical of buildings built in this period for the newly expanded Commonwealth Bank. An early commercial building and a rare survivor for this area. Associated with the early development of Bondi as a popular surfing beach. Important streetscape contribution. Local significance.

Description
Construction Years: 1915 - 1945
Physical Description: 1930's style commercial building. Art Deco/Egyptian styling. Fully rendered façade with high, decorative, central recess. Incorporates entry and feature window above. Two matching windows on each side of recess. Limited rendered decoration to window heads and parapet cornice. Little altered except for signs and advertising.

History
Historical Notes: In 1931 the Commonwealth Bank amalgamated with the Government Savings Bank of NSW. The Bank's Bondi Beach branch operated from the latter's 1927 building, at 82 Campbell Parade (now the State Bank), until the branch moved to this building in Hall Street in 1938. (Dowd, p. 260).
