The Heritage Council was created by the Heritage Act 1977. The Chair of the Heritage Council is Gabrielle Kibble AO. The Heritage Council's membership reflects a cross-section of community, government and conservation expertise.
The Heritage Council carries out functions under the Heritage Act and receives advice and administrative support from the Heritage Branch.

Role of the Heritage Council
The council:
- provides advice on heritage matters to the Assistant Minister for Infrastructure & Planning;
- recommends iteof State significance for listing on the State Heritage Register;
- recommends the interim protection of potential heritage iteso that an assessment of their significance can be made;
- determines proposed changes to iteon the State Heritage Register to retain the item's heritage significance; and
- advises the community on heritage.
