Local Government Resources

This page provides access to resources for Local Government to assist with heritage management.

Most of the heritage items on statutory lists in NSW are managed by local councils. This includes over 20,000 individual heritage items listed in Local Environmental Plans and many thousand more within 183 conservation areas.Local councils and their communities are at the forefront of the vital task of conserving the heritage of New South Wales. The Local Government Heritage Resource Centre offers those working in or for local government easy access to information and resources on heritage management specific to local government.

Local Government Heritage Guidelines

Since February 2002 all local councils have received delegation to undertake certain approval functions of the Heritage Council of NSW. Some local councils can now also make interim heritage orders.

The Local Government Heritage Guidelines have been produced to assist your council to implement these new responsibilities.

Database Software

An initiative of the Heritage Branch to assist in the identification and assessment of heritage items is to provide database software. This software is available free of charge to government agencies, local government and heritage professionals conducting heritage studies and compiling heirtage and conservation registers (S.170 registers).

Go to the State Heritage Inventory (SHI) database software.
