for exemplar "on-the-ground" interpretation for major NSW heritage sites, e.g. major industrial sites, former mining towns or entire villages for heritage items on the State Heritage Register and of state significance.
has strong links with heritage tourism. Targets funding towards innovative best practice projects that communicate and present heritage values to the community

| For example |
You are the owner/operator of a heritage tourism industrial site that is listed on the State Heritage Register. You have prepared an interpretation plan for the site and now want to implement some of the "on-the-ground" recommendations from the plan. These works will cost $40,000. You can apply for a $-for-$ grant of up to $20,000 |

Dollar for dollar grants from $5,000 to $20,000 for projects valued at $10,000 upwards |

| Who can apply |
All owners and managers of State Heritage Register and state significant heritage items
However you CAN NOT apply for funding if you are a state government agency (but may be involved as a project partner) |

| Eligible Projects |
Major heritage sites or precincts listed on the State Heritage Register, or of
State significance that are either
- Listed as a state heritage item in your Local Environmental Plan, or
- Supported by your local council's heritage advisor or other heritage specialist as being of state heritage significance
And you have completed an interpretation plan and are seeking funding for on-ground works implementation of this interpretation plan
You can apply for funding concurrently through this program and other NSW Heritage Grants 2008-2009 programs. If you apply for funding through more than one program, the total available funding for your heritage item will be $75,000

| Ineligible Projects |
Where you have not completed an interpretation plan
Your project is for a local heritage item listed on your council's local environmental plan. You can approach your local council for assistance through your local heritage fund. Allocation of these funds is at council's discretion and are generally small grants, dollar for dollar grants up to $10,000

Is for a major heritage site or precinct listed on the State Heritage Register with tourism potential, and/ or
Your heritage items is included in a state, regional or local tourism strategy, and/ or
Projects that assist public access and visitation to your heritage item

Funding is targeted to projects with
- Sustainable long term heritage benefits
- Public benefit and enjoyment
- Innovation and leadership
- Capacity and commitment to undertake and complete the project
- Funding equity and cost effectiveness

| Processing your application |
The Heritage Branch will acknowledge receipt of your application within 21 days
Your application will be assessed and you will be advised of the outcome following approval by the Minister for Planning in March 2008
In assessing your application, the quality and clarity of information provided will be taken into account
We will advise unsuccessful applicants after March 2008
A funding offer and contract will be sent to successful applicants after March 2008. On your acceptance of this offer, funding will commence on 1 July 2008
All projects must be completed and all funding claimed by 30 May 2009
NSW Heritage Grants 2008-2009 is a targeted funding program. Projects must meet eligibility criteria, program priorities and common selection criteria. However in exception circumstances, the Heritage Branch, Department of Planning reserves the right to recommend funding for projects that may not fully meet the program selection criteria
