Aboriginal heritage projects Aboriginal heritage projects
 
Project purpose for projects that conserve, promote and increase understanding of Aboriginal heritage
 
For example Your local Aboriginal community group is planning to undertake a project to interpret an Aboriginal heritage place in your local area costing $20,000. You decide to apply for an Aboriginal heritage grant of $20,000 to assist you with this project
 
Funding A grant is available for Aboriginal heritage projects

You can apply for funding concurrently through this program and other NSW Heritage Grants 2008-2009 programs. If you apply for funding through more than one program, the total available funding for your heritage item will be $75,000

 
Application closing dates Applications can be made at any time throughout the year
 
Who can apply Aboriginal organisation or community group

Local councils or shire, other organisations or consultants working in partnership with an Aboriginal applicant

Individuals that have the support of the local Aboriginal community

However, you CAN NOT apply for funding if you are a state or local government agency undertaking work as part of your statutory responsibilities (but you may be involved as a project partner to a community organisation, individual or business)

 
Recently funded projects Recapturing the history of Brewarrina Mission
 
Eligible Projects Provide or assist in the interpretation of culturally significant Aboriginal places

Record or document significant Aboriginal community events, including contemporary community events

Post contact Aboriginal heritage of NSW, for

  • Mission housing and reserves
  • Travelling stock routes and trading routes
  • Industries including pastoralism, fishing and forestry
  • Shared history project and social themes including showgrounds, race courses, world wars etc

Contribute to Aboriginal tourism

Co-funded projects in western NSW with Council of Australian Governments (COAG)

Link with the CDEP works programs

Encourage communities to record oral histories and collections to increase understanding between generations and communities

Research of a place, an area or event/s

Provide on-ground site interpretation for socially significant places/sites such as walkways, signs, trails, mapping of tracks or places

Educate communities on their cultural heritage through media such as brochures, DVDs and publications

Undertake physical conservation works arising from site planning and history projects

 
Ineligible Projects Aboriginal local government heritage studies are funded through the Local Government Heritage Management Program

 
Priorities Heritage items listed on the State Heritage Register

Projects that will assist and lead to nominations and listing on the State Heritage Register

Co-funded projects in western NSW with Council of Australian Governments (COAG)

On-ground site interpretation projects for socially significant places/sites such as walkways, signs, trails, mapping of tracks or places

 
Common selection criteria for all projects Funding is targeted to projects with
  • Sustainable long term heritage benefits
  • Public benefit and enjoyment
  • Innovation and leadership
  • Capacity and commitment to undertake and complete the project
  • Funding equity and cost effectiveness

Processing your application The Heritage Branch will acknowledge receipt of your application within 21 days

Your application will be assessed and you will be advised of the outcome following approval of your application

In assessing your application, the quality and clarity of information provided will be taken into account

We will advise unsuccessful applicants after March 2008

A funding offer and contract will be sent to successful applicants after March 2008. On your acceptance of this offer, funding will commence on 1 July 2008

All projects must be completed and all funding claimed by 30 May 2009

NSW Heritage Grants 2008-2009 is a targeted funding program. Projects must meet eligibility criteria, program priorities and common selection criteria. However in exception circumstances, the Heritage Branch, Department of Planning reserves the right to recommend funding for projects that may not fully meet the program selection criteria
